What to knit the man in your life?

Try these!

Sent to me by an “old animator” my friend Larry. He and I worked on a number of animated series together. Larry is a fabulous animation director with a wicked sense of humour. We spent a lovely week every month for a year in New York, working hard on kiddie shows, and getting to know New York. I still have fond memories of the Big Apple. For those of you who only know me as a dyer, I used to be an animation producer. I still consult, but I no longer produce, now that I live in beautiful Banff.

Larry is a lover of craft as art and he shared these with me recently. I’d love to knit up a pair of these boxers for my hubby for Christmas for a laugh, but it will be hard to explain exactly why I need to measure certain parts (hey they need to fit nice and tight!) without giving it away.

To enter, please leave a blog comment letting them know what tickles your fancy from the Winter Issue; retweeting contest announcements and/or using the hashtag #knitcircuswinter counts, too! Make sure to include your email, Twitter or Ravelry handle so they can contact you if you win.

Here’s the CONTEST LINK.

If you scroll down partway down the post you will see “Now, for Giveaway #2″. There are a bunch of prizes shown, including some Bow Falls Fingering. The post says the contest goes until Friday November 25th so post your comments quickly.

RIPEN Shawl by Meghan Jackson in Rocky Mountain Dyeworks “Bow Falls Fingering” – Falling Leaves colourway

Meghan’s “Ripen” shawl is in the Knitcircus Winter Issue and you can purchase the one pattern, the entire collection or give yourself a gift of a subscription for a year. I think the subscription is the best price and the pattern collection comes as a PDF you download, save to your computer and print when you need. I keep mine handy on my iPad because you never know when a girl’s going to need to troll through hundreds of patterns while on the road.

Isn’t this just gorgeous? I love Knitcircus and the crew who lovingly keep this magazine an interesting read, with fabulous patterns and at least one recipe thrown in every issue. Check it out!

New Yarn and New Month Resolutions

I can’t believe I haven’t posted on my blog since July!!! Where the heck did the summer and fall go?!

The first part of the year felt normal but I think Superman has been spinning the earth at twice normal speed for his own nefarious purposes (those glasses and his hairdo always creeped me out and I had a difficult time believing he was totally altruistic), and now the earth is spinning towards a year end and I find myself just shy of December.

So I’ve made a new resolution – more posting in December and the new year; shorter newsletters so I can get them out faster. I envy Santa his little elves!
I have lots of news, a couple of contests, Rocky Mountain Dyeworks yarns featured by fabulous designers.

If you’d like to sign up for the newsletter you can click this NEWSLETTER SIGN UP link, or email me and I’ll sign you up, with your permission.

I hope your knitting goals are all being met!

NEW YARNS

I’m posting new yarns today. I’ve taken a break from listing them (not live yet) to write this quick post).
Hoodoo Sock, Kasquade Lace, Sundance Sock, Bow Falls Fingering, Spirit River Worsted, Troll Falls Worsted, Red Earth Roving and there may be a few others I’ve forgotten about. They will all be posted by midnight tonight and as soon as they are, the newsletter, which is finally ready and waiting, will go out as well.

Here’s a peak at Hoodoo Sock! I love this stuff. I kinda think its wasted on socks. You can’t tell there’s any nylon in it – its soft enough to be a body-hugging garment.

Here’s one of the new Sundance Sock colourways.

Knitting mini mochimochi

My son discovered mochimochi in a book while waiting for me at The Loop in Calgary. Anna Hrachovec’s book “Knitting Mochimochi” kept him occupied for a few hours as he tried to decide which one I would knit first.

Knitting Mochimochi by Anna Hrachovec

We didn’t buy the book that day but we downloaded on of the mini mochimochi patterns off of Anna’s website and my son took “chickie” (the penguin) to school, stashed in his pocket, everyday for a week.

Here’s our current collection of mini mochimochi. They take very little yarn so great to make if you have sample skeins hanging around, or bits of leftover yarns. You can use weights heavier than fingering and you’ll end up with a larger toy since gauge isn’t important. Its a fantastic way to use up any left over yarns.

"Chickie" and his nest

We designed a nest for Chickie to sleep in using a long icord sewn in rounds. Whew! Now he has a proper bed.

Last Day of the Shuttle

In honour of a great shuttle program I knit up a little shuttle to commemorate 30 cool years of discovering space. This is the mini mochimochi design “rocket”. I just changed the placement of his fins to make him look more like the space shuttle.

This is our knitted version of the “Three Sisters” mountain range in Canmore.

We knit up a goat for our mountain range. I wanted to make it a Big Horned Sheep but my son loved the little beard he saw on Anna’s goat so we have a hybrid Mountain Sheep Goat.

Our mini mochimochis live in my iPhone box when they aren’t off exploring with my son.

New Stores and New Yarns

Two new stores have been carrying our yarn for a couple of months now. I know I have mentioned them before but I would like to thank them for their support again. I’m hearing from knitters who’ve recently discovered my yarns at either The Purple Purl or The Loop.

We are thrilled to be part of The Purple Purl’s stock. They are carrying Red Earth Roving Fibre, Bow Falls Fingering and Kicking Horse Sock. Hopefully the yarns will do well and we can entice them to carry more.

Visit Miko and Jennifer at The Purple Purl in Toronto. They are having a sale on Canadian talent in July. I have heard from one knitter that she snagged some green Bow Falls Fingering there so I think their order has finally made it through the Canada Post sludge. Go see them for great deals on Canadian Made until the end of July!

The Loop in Kensington, Calgary have been having so much fun with my yarn. I keep hearing from local knitters who’ve picked up colours I’m surprised to learn I dyed. Its amazing how different a yarn looks once its been given new life as a finished object and I’m proud to say I’ve seen gorgeous items in Rocky Mountain Dyeworks yarns.

The ladies at The Loop have a great together on Thursdays….I can’t say its a formal gathering but they are open late so drop by to say hello and knit a little….and of course to add to your stash!

New Yarns will be posted on the Rocky Mountain Dyeworks Website by end of the week. I hope to have the Paypal problems fixed by then. We did an update three months ago and have been having problems ever since throughout the site. I apologize to all for the frustration – email me if there’s yarn you want and I can get back to you right away.

Print Your Own Chocolate

I couldn’t help sharing this one.

I found it on the Macworld blog (I’m a Mac Nerd). See the lead in to the article below and read the entire article at MacWorld.

“Chocolate printer is here; foodies celebrate”

by Elizabeth Fish, PCWorld Jul 6, 2011 7:15 am

Editor’s Note: The following article is reprinted from the Geek Tech blog at PCWorld.com.

“If you’re a big chocoholic, you might have dreamed of swimming in a sea of chocolate, or at least having a never ending supply. While neither of those are likely to happen, the University of Exeter in the UK has created something just as cool: a 3D printer that prints with chocolate.”

What would you print?

I would like a chocolate spinning wheel so I can snack without having to stop spinning. I’d have to figure out what parts I could eat and still keep the structure in tact……perhaps some extra decorative spindles could be added to my chocolate wheel for safe snacking. Would be perfect for the Tour de Fleece!

knittyspin Review of Red Roving Fibre

I just want to let everyone know how excited I am about a review of my Red Roving Fibre that appeared last Thursday in the First Fall Issue of knittyspin.

For those of you who don’t know knittyspin, its the Spinning sister of knitty.com, the free online knitting and spinning magazine that was launched in 2002.

The special fibre review section is called “Fibre Fiesta“. In this section, fibres from different companies are reviewed by 4 or 5 average spinners. The important word is “average” and each fibre is tested by spinners of varying experience.

To quote Jillian Moreno, the knittyspin editor, “Because it’s nice to know what other spinners think about a fiber you haven’t yet tried, welcome to the Knittyspin Fiber Fiesta feature! Each type of fiber is tested by up to 5 average spinners, each with a different background and level of experience. Each spinner is provided with the same amount of fiber, and each spinner spins, plies, finishes and knits each fiber as it speaks to them. Their feedback is collected on a standardized form and summarized below. New! Starting this issue, you can follow one spinner’s comments all through each review, right up to the yarn they spun and swatch they knit.”

I want to thank Jillian and the Fibre Fiesta spinners for tackling, and loving, Red Earth Roving. They reviewed Pink Pussytoes (named after a local plant) and Big Green Stinkbug (named after, you guessed it, a local bug!).

Summer Sunflowers Shawl

Natalie Servant, of Natalie Servant Designs, has designed a stunning summer shawl with Rocky Mountain Dyeworks Bow Falls Finerging in “Sunflower” called Sunflower Field Shawl.

I dyed this yarn at Natalie’s request in April. She’d been dreaming and thinking of the fields of France and so I dyed vineyard, poppy and sunflower colourways for her. I love hearing from designers with a specific colour request – its a creative challenge and it stimulates my imagination as I try to capture the essence of an idea in colour applied to a skein of yarn.

All of the original “Sunflower” colourways have sold out. I have dyed “Sunflower II” which has more variation and the bright yellow is touched with a bit of green and brown. I will redye “Sunflower” when I can get some undyed stock again (see note about Canada Post below). I love the stems up the middle of the shawl. And Natalie tells me you can also knit it without the middle section so that it looks like one giant sunflower. I feel sheer joy when I see this shawl. Its raining here again. It feels like its been raining the entire month of June and seeing the photo of this shawl on my computer makes me feel the light and warmth of summer.

I will be reskeining and packagaing “Sunflower II” this week. If you are local and want to see a skein, let me know. Otherwise, in Canada, we wait for our postal strike to end. I have looked at shipping Greyhound and Fed Ex and both are prohibitive for yarn sales. Greyhound has raised their prices these last two years because of gas price increases, and they are no longer affordable.

Susanna IC “Orchidea” Shawl Pattern in Knitcircus

SQUEEEEEEE my yarn made the cover of Knitcircus magazine!

Long long overdue but perhaps my post can be seen as a refresher and a reminder to check out Knitcircus e-mag! I love this magazine and it now has cool embedded videos. The videos in the last few issues, for teaching kids to knit, should be school curriculum. I can’t wait to get an iPad, just for my Knitcircus e-mag. The articles and interviews with dyers and knitters are well written and substantial.

Susanna IC "Orchidea" Knitcircus e-mag

Susanna IC - a very hot and prolific designer graced my yarns with one of her beautiful designs. You can find her on Ravelry at the link above and/or you can also visit her website artqualia.

Glacier Ice Lace is a super soft lace weight yarn, 70% Alpaca & 30% Silk. Scared of lace weight yarns? Don’t be. I can’t believe how easy this one is to work with. A combination of Alpaca and Silk, it is sticky enough that you won’t drop all those YOs with silk providing the drape you need in a shawl.

I custom dyed this for Susanna to match a photograph of an orchid she sent me. I can’t say how happy I am that she was pleased with the colour. I’m always secretly scared it won’t be quite right when a designer makes a colour request.

I’m dyeing more Glacier Ice Lace and will be saving a skein of the new batch to knit up this gorgeous shawl. I love the combination of stylized orchids and the mesh. I can’t imagine a more beautiful pattern to wear on a warm summer night.

Belated Congrats to Contest Winners

I apologize for posting so late (this will be my refrain until I’ve caught up with a few outstanding news items!)

Anne-Marie Puccini

and

Josey Harvey

Won a fantastic prize pack. Originally I was doing one Bag with Yarn and Goodies as a give away (May 2011 newsletter) but I felt bad that I let it go so long so I added a second prize.

The ladies are currently working out their prize packs with me as they have a few choices to make of bag and yarn and I will post photos when decisions are final.

Thanks for playing along! Keep an eye out in the newsletter for more giveaways on the blog.
