Gallery

Made with Rocky Mountain Dyeworks yarns and fibres.  Send in your photos – we’d love to feature yours!

In this Gallery you will find, eventually, at least one knitted item from each of the yarns we dye.  Its important for me as a dyer to know how a yarn handles, beyond the dyeing process and its critical to know if it knits up well and wears equally well.

Abstract Vine Hat

Yarn: Rocky Mountain Dyeworks  Banff Light Bulky

Pattern: Abstract Vine Hat, Michelle Miller, The Fickle Knitter

Notes: When I first tried dyeing yarn I started with Knit Picks Bare yarns and bought one skein of each to test.  Back then it was the only “small” source of undyed yarn, where I didn’t have to invest money in volumes.  Michelle’s hat, since it was designed with Knit Picks yarn, was ideal to finally knit this up.

Eileen’s Arabella

Yarn: Rocky Mountain Dyeworks Bow Falls Fingering

Pattern: Arabella, Kristen Hanley Cardozo, The Knitting Kninja

Notes: I loved this pattern and it was perfect for the BFL fingering yarn.  The pattern shows beautifully and its easy to knit with. Photo taken on location at Bow Falls, namesake for the yarn.

Brandywine Shawlette

Yarn: Rocky Mountain Dyeworks Mt. Sparrowhawk Sock

Pattern: Brandywine, by Rosemary Hill, Designs by Romi

Notes: My first shawl since I gave up lace knitting 4 years ago!  This was such a great way to test the waters after a first failed attempt.  And it turned out so well that I just got bolder with shawl patterns.  This is a shawlette size and basically a neck scarf.  I would like to make it again but twice the size (2 skeins) so I can wear it to defend my body from the cold.

Cashmere Clothilde

Yarn: Rocky Mountain Dyeworks  Unnamed Sample Yarn

Pattern: Clothilde, Kristen Hanley Cardozo, The Knitting Kninja

Notes: I love this pattern and would love to make it in a shorter length. Easy pattern, complex looking results.
About the Yarn: I had heard stories about problems with Cashmere, depending on the animal husbandry. I don’t know what kind of Cashmere this is but I do know that it was so brittle it broke time and again.  I wove in 29 ends!  I am not carrying it and have been searching for a new source for 100% lace weight cashmere. Still searching!

Death By Dover Castle

Yarn: Rocky Mountain Dyeworks Bow Falls Fingering

Pattern: Dover Castle, by Judy Marples

Notes: I was so happy knitting with this colourway.  I knew the yarn would be perfect but the colour was glorious.  It made me happy to have created it!  Now I want one of my own.  This was made for a swap on Ravlery.

Hot Red Girl with a Purl Earring Hat

Yarn: Rocky Mountain Dyeworks Banff Bulky

Pattern: Girl with a Purl Earring Hat, Michelle Miller, The Fickle Knitter

Notes: Snow is almost here and when Michelle was looking for test knitters I jumped at the opportunity.  This is the most elegant hat (not in the photo) that I have ever seen made from Bulky yarn.

Good Luck Cowl

Yarn: Rocky Mountain Dyeworks Kicking Horse Sock

Pattern: Good Luck Cowl, by Christianne Gerstner

Notes: This yarn is perfect for spring and summer knitting. The Bamboo is cool to knit with.  I am having issues (moral ones!) about carrying it even though its a hot seller.  The chemicals necessary to turn Bamboo into yarn are horrendous and I found out after I started carrying it.  Decision to be made.

Handspun Ishbel

Yarn: Rocky Mountain Dyeworks Rundle Roving

Pattern: Ishbel, by Isolda Teague

Notes: My first hand dyed, hand spun, hand knit project!  I have to say it was fantastic it take it from carded top to something I wear. The combination of the solid body with the lace was perfect for the multi-coloured yarn I made.  This was made from all the small samples I kept of all my hand-dyed colourways.  At first I was just going to spin them and keep it as a sampler skein but I couldn’t resist and before I knew it I was knitting it up.

My Susan Scarf

Yarn: Rocky Mountain Dyeworks Cascade Lace

Pattern: Susan Scarf, Kristen Hanley Cardozo, The Knitting Kninja

Notes: This is the best next to skin yarn.  I love the sheen from the silk, the strength from the wool – it wears well and pills very little.  This was made with 150 yards.  I had to alter the pattern to fit the amount of yarn.  I would make it again twice as wide and long.  It would be a perfect gift.  Fast, luxurious and impressive with little hard work.

Simple Bulky Hat

Yarn: Rocky Mountain Dyeworks Banff Bulky

Pattern: Simple Bulky Hat, Michelle Miller, The Fickle Knitter

Notes: Another of Michelle’s awesome quick hats. She’s given me a whole new skiing/winter wardrobe.  The hat is warm and simple with enough colour to catch attention without standing out.  And it covers my ears!

Sweet Georgia Shawl

Yarn: Rocky Mountain Dyeworks Emerald Lake Lace

Pattern: Sweet Georgia Shawl, Michelle Miller, The Fickle Knitter

Notes:My very first lace shawl. Using Emerald Lake Lace, a true lace-weight yarn, I finally completed, and adore this shawl. Its light, warm and a lot simpler to knit than it looks. Designer Michelle Miller is one of my favourites.
